A program on TV talked about mail order brides from Russia, Thailand, Vietnam and where else? You bet! Philippines was on the agenda. A white man married to a Filipina set up an agency called “East meets West” where they help men on a particular age group find their younger wife. I know it was somewhat disturbing for others, especially those who did not hear of it yet. The man was in his 60s while the woman still in her mid 20s when they got married. That put a big deal on others. The comment that I found disturbing was the honest opinion that we are indeed desperately poor, that we are willing to take and grab any opportunity that comes our way. That of course, as this topic is all about, includes marrying a strange man in return of a better life. The man depended that there are extremely rich people in PI, however, that still did not matter as the statistics soared as higher as 70% rate in poverty. They obviously pointed out those that live in swamps, cemetery and on streets.
Hubby and I discussed about it afterwards. He’s in his early 30s and I am in my late 20s. He is black not white. He is poor from a third world country like mine. BUT we met online which made me feel a bit bothered. The difference was, I did the finding myself. I never was a mail order bride. I knew my husband before we tied the knot. It also was my will to marry him and never was I forced to do that. Duh, I thought of sending some Filipino friends a message so they could as well watch the program if they’re home, I ended up not doing it.
